The Nurburgring hosted its first race in 1927. Ever since then, the companies have been fighting for the coveted title of fastest production car Nurburgring Lap Time. In recent years, only two car companies have been able to achieve the Lap Time record: Lamborghini and Porsche. However, Mercedes-AMG has recently beat both of them. In 2013, the Porsche 918 Spyder set the first sub-seven minute Nurburgring Lap Time of 6:57.00. The 918 Spyder had been hidden beneath the shadows of the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1. After setting the record, the remaining Porsche 918 Spyders, which had not been sold due to a lack of popularity, sold out overnight. This is the reason companies set out to beat the existing Nurburgring Lap Time record. In 2016, the Lamborghini Huracan Performante dethroned the Porsche with a lap time of 6:52.01. Then, in 2017, the Porsche 911 GT2-RS took the record from Lamborghini with a time of 6:47.25. Finally, in 2018, the Lamborghini Aventador SVJ took the record from the GT2-RS with a time of 6:44.97. A few months after the SVJ’s Nurburgring run, a modified Porsche 911 GT2-RS beat the SVJ by nearly five seconds with a time of 6:40.03. Today, the record for fastest production car Nurburgring Lap Time is held by the AMG GT Black Series with a time of 6:43.616. Although the GT2-RS was road-legal, it was not stock from the factory and therefore disqualified from holding the production car Nurburgring Lap Time record even though it beat the AMG GT Black series by about three seconds. A company other than Lamborghini or Porsche has finally gotten the production car Nurburgring Lap Time record and I am excited for the new competition that will proceed!
